Generation Interns

More than a program

It’s about laying hold of the upward call. It’s about the development and deployment of a new generation of leaders into the twenty-first century. It’s about training and sending young leaders all around the world. It’s about what happens when information and application come together and create transformation.

About Generation Interns

Classroom instruction

Instruction sessions include courses in biblical content, practical ministry, and relevant life issues that equip each Intern with foundational truths that build character and knowledge essential for Kingdom service. The core classes offered at Generation Interns are Portland Bible College extension courses taught locally by our instructors. Interns who complete the classes will receive PBC degree credits.

Practical ministry tracks

Whether it’s involvement in a campus Bible study, delivering food products, calling visitors, or working in the media ministry; you’ll be involved in the heartbeat of a growing and thriving ministry. We believe that teaching and experience go hand-in-hand, and that the integration of information and application is the key to your success.

Missions & outreach

The Generation Intern program offers mission trips through The City Church to various local churches we are in relationship with in America and around world including church plants in San Diego, CA; Las Vegas, NV; Washington DC; Indonesia, India, Uganda, Mexico and others. We believe in investing and empowering the local church in order to see the body of Christ extended in the world

Spiritual lifestyle

As an Intern, we want you above all else to be intimately acquainted with the voice of God. Prayer is where that happens. Every year, Interns say that it is in these moments of prayer that make the greatest and most lasting impressions on their lives. You’ll also be spending time building relationships and ministering in the context of small groups. It is a time to be mentored by some of our best leaders and to see your own leadership skills develop as you interact with others in life-giving accountability relationships

Wendell & Gini Smith
Founding Pastors

Dr. Wendell Smith and his wife Gini are the Founding Pastors of The City Church in Seattle, Washington. The Smiths pioneered the church in 1992 and were the Sr. Pastors for eighteen years. Under their leadership, The City Church grew from a launch team of twenty-one people into a multi-ethnic church of thousands. The City Church is known for its faith and its balanced, biblical teaching on prosperity. It is active in giving to the poor and needy and in funding ministries throughout the world. The church meets at multiple locations in the Seattle area, a strategy that has reproduced its effectiveness in reaching many communities throughout the area. Weekend services are simulcast live to all locations and transmitted to tens of thousands of people via Internet and weekly television programs.

Dedicated facilities

The City Church, over the years and through multiple miracles, has acquired many church buildings throughout the Seattle region making us ‘one church in many locations.’ Our weekend services are simulcast live to all of our church campuses, including the Plateau campus. This unique campus is situated in the beautiful setting of the Issaquah/ Sammamish area surrounded by woods and in walking distance of Lake Sammamish. The Plateau campus, with college style dorms, a full service cafeteria, staff offices and classrooms, is also home to our Generation Intern program. As one of our thriving churches campuses, this renovated bible college is the perfect setting for young leaders to be trained in ministry.

How to apply

The application process

Acceptance into Generation Interns will be determined by your application portfolio, references, an interview and the prayerful decision of our pastoral team. Three factors contribute in determining whether it is the right time for you to be a Generation Intern:

  1. Spiritual Authority: We want to know that the spiritual authorities in your life (parents, pastors, and mentors) all agree that this is the right training environment for you at this time.
  2. Personal Life: Spiritual maturity and preparedness are key factors in determining entrance into this program. In order to be considered for acceptance, your commitment to spiritual disciplines and involvement in a local church over the past six months will be examined.
  3. Finances: You must demonstrate financial stability in order to be considered as a Generation Intern. Interns are not permitted to work full time jobs. Interns may work part time (around 20 hours per week) as long as it does not interfere with the Generation Intern schedule.
